Our homeschool group has used this book as part of our Japan unit for grades (High schoolers would enjoy it as well.) Well-written historical fiction is a marvelous way for students to learn history. The author of The Master Puppeteer has obviously done quite a bit of homework about this period of history, Japan in the s/5. The deep bond between Jiro and the puppet-master's son Kinshi, both apparently unloved by their demanding fathers, forms this adventure's stable core, but Paterson's ability to exploit the tension between violence in the street and dreamlike confrontations of masked puppet operators is what makes this more lively and immediate then her other.
